FAQ Machu Picchu one day tour

Machu Picchu one day tour frequently asked questions

What days is Machu Picchu closed?

The citadel of Machu Picchu does not close any day, except for situations that get out of control, such as floods, natural disasters, or pandemic outbreaks that force the closure. The opening hours for Machu Picchu are from Monday to Sunday from 6 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

What is the best Machu Picchu circuit?

Circuit 2 is considered the best of Machu Picchu because it allows a more complete tour of the constructions of the Inca citadel.

Which is better Peru Rail or Inca Rail?

Peru Rail offers more daily departures to Machu Picchu compared to Inca Rail. However, both include high-quality tourist services. Most daily departures in both cases are from Ollantaytambo station. The ‘Expedition’ and ‘The Voyager’ services are the cheapest services of both companies.

What is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

It will depend on the weather you prefer. The dry season is from April to October and the rainy season is from November to March.

Dry season. In the city of Cusco (an obligatory stop for almost all visitors), the weather is rather cool during the whole period and quite cold between June and the end of August. However, Machu Picchu belongs to a subtropical climate, the days are mild to hot, and sometimes a little cold at night. In the city of Cusco, it does not rain during this season, while in Machu Picchu there can be very fast and light drizzles on some days.

Rainy season. On the other hand, in the city of Cusco, it rains quite a lot during these months, but in short periods and 2 or 3 times per week, the same can be observed in Machu Picchu. It is advisable to bring a waterproof jacket or poncho for the rain. Also, dress in layers, light clothing underneath, and a little thicker on top, so you will be prepared for any kind of weather.

Why is the train so expensive?

Peru Rail and Inca Rail are the two operators that have a duopoly on the route, so they can maintain very high prices.

How do I avoid altitude sickness?

Take Soroche pills (Diamox), eat a little, drink coca tea, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol (it is a dehydrating agent). The best way to avoid altitude sickness is to acclimatize. The recommended method for acclimatization is to ascend gradually, spending at least 24 hours every 2,000 feet of altitude increase.

How far in advance should I book my ticket to Machu Picchu?

Although you can book your ticket to Machu Picchu one day in advance, it is best to book at least one or two months before your visit. Admissions are limited and it is advisable to book in advance. In case you wish to visit Huayna Picchu, consider your reservation time 4 months before your visit.

These recommendations are important for your Machu Picchu experience to be the best since the most popular tickets such as the 1-2 Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu circuits are sold out very quickly.

The solution for those travelers who could not book in advance is to buy tickets with alternative income, circuit 4 or 3 where you will see Machu Picchu, but you will not get to have the classic photo, you can see the temples and see Machu Picchu from the bottom.

There are some dates of the year when you will not be able to get a last-minute ticket or alternative tickets due to demand, and some dates you will not find alternative tickets, so if you were not able to book early, you will be disappointed.

It can be cumbersome for you to book your ticket, so our recommendation would be to anticipate with a good margin of time or contact a security agency to guarantee your visit to Machu Picchu.
